I'm Tom Darby, a technical leader with extensive experience as a director of development, a full-stack application developer, and a multimedia designer. For years, I have built and led highly talented teams of developers, designers, and testers in designing and producing cutting-edge online interactive learning platforms and products. My professional path has taken me across industries and around the world. Early in my career, I worked in Paris as a technical liaison, creating web applications for finance projects at the largest bank in France. Later, I was a programmer for a major pollster during a hotly contested midterm election. I've directed over twenty people in a wide variety of technical and design roles. Over my two-decade career, I’ve learned to effectively work with and lead a broad range of groups including techies, artists, educators, programmers, analysts, writers, temps, managers, and executives. Today, as the founder of Magic Chopstick Games, I create, develop, and publish video games for a variety of platforms and audiences.
As the Director of Multimedia Development for Pearson Online and Blended Learning, I led teams of designers, developers, and testers through all phases of software and content development. These teams were responsible for every aspect of internal multimedia production and development within Pearson Online and Blended Learning. When I left the company in 2018, my teams were among the most reliable and efficacious in the entire organization. Thanks to years of careful growth, thoughtful planning, meticulous project management, forward-thinking design, and rigorous self-review and improvement, we were able to produce industry-leading interactive media frameworks, multiple award-winning interactive learning tools, and a highly extensible and robust online media creation and content management system.
As an example of my leadership, my multimedia production team was tasked with producing over 35 hours of animated content in a short period–more than three times the work our full-time staff had the capacity to create. With a creative product re-design, thorough planning, efficient contracting, and active project management, my team and I were able to deliver our products on time and 20% under budget. I excel at this kind of leadership challenge.
